In a Japanese garden…
Japanese pieces for soprano and alto saxophone solo, inspired by nature and/or the perception of time
A couple of years ago, whilst visiting masterclasses, I met a Japanese saxophone student who taught me a clapping song on Japanese orange blossoms. Funnily, in the years that followed, I kept meeting Japanese people, teaching me words with a strong relation to nature, the seasons and time. This made me wonder about the perception of time in Japanese music and inspired me to create a program based on music inspired by nature and time.
The program I would like to play, will consist of the following pieces:
* Mysterious Morning III – Fuminori TANADA, for sopranosaxophone solo
* Etude sur le bisbigliando – Noriko BABA, for altosaxophone solo
* Distance – Toru TAKEMITSU, for sopranosaxophone solo
* Pulse 72 ± – Ryo NODA, for altosaxophone solo
* Night Bird – Karen TANAKA, for altosaxophone with CD

« Three as 1 » creation
jazz / France
« Three as 1 » has been composed by Dave Liebman and comissioned by SaxOpen.
The duet piano-soprano is one of his favorite setting.
« Three as 1 » is not a « jazzy » piece ; Liebman’s rigorous writing explores the limits of the tonality, proposes deep harmonic structures, atonal or serial.
Performance organized with the support of Jazzdor Festival.

Baritone Institute will perform as part of World Sax Day (www.worldsaxday.com)
Biography
The Baritone Institute: an initiative of Niels Bijl and Jan Menu, supported by The Four Baritones and Katharina Thomsen following the highly successful cooperation in the Amsterdam Grachtenfestival 2011. It was a shared desire of Jan and Niels: an open stage for the baritone saxophone. Genre free, open to professionals, amateurs and anyone in need of a society for development of the most charming and versatile of the saxophone family, the baritone.
More informations
Phillipe Geiss of the SaxOpen 2015 has invited Jan Menu and Niels Bijl, to bring the Baritone Institute to the Elzas and create a safe haven for baritone players world wide, both professional and amateur. Preceding the actual Congress, the Baritone Institute will reside in Chateau du Hohlandsbourg, for a Baritone Summer School. Here professional baritone saxophonists will work together, share knowledge and repertoire, and form ensembles, loosely based on the concept of The Four Baritones. Amateur saxophonists are invited to follow workshops in all musical fields, and learn new techniques and emsemble pieces. This performance will focus on the achievements of the professionals, who are now part of their own international Baritone Institute.
