Using the results of his research group from University of Brussels, Koen Dries will illustrate the principles of respiratory muscle training and the possible effects on the sound.

 

Biography

Koen Dries (1986) is a saxophone player, teacher, conductor and researcher that is currently pursuing a Phd in arts at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels (KCB) and the University of Brussels (VUB). As a researcher, Koen focuses on developing new approaches to common musical problems in cooperation with scientists. As a solist Koen appeared with symphony orchestras, wind bands and chamber ensembles in works of Ibert, Debussy, Jolas, Boutry, Maurice, … He was a prize winner at several national and international competitions (Competition for young Saxophone Players – Dinant, Axion Classics, Concours Européenne de Musique de Picardie – Amiens, …). As a teacher, Koen is currently assistant professor of saxophone at the Royal Conservatory of Brussel.

Respiratory muscle training is a technique for developing strength and endurance of your breathing muscles. Our research group (Royal Conservatory Brussels, University of Brussels) recently conducted an interdisciplinary artistic-scientific experiment on respiratory muscle training for saxophone players. Using these research results I will illustrate the principles of respiratory muscle training, the possible effects on your sound and how it can help you during practicing or performance.
