New work by the percussionist Dr. Zachary Cairns showcasing a rhythmically-driven exchange between the weighty timbre of the baritone saxophone and multiple percussion instruments.
Biography
Adrianne Honnold is Lecturer in Saxophone at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and Washington University in St. Louis, and is an Artistic Director of Chamber Project St. Louis. She received her Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she studied with Debra Richtmeyer and Chip McNeill. She is a former member of the United States Air Force Heritage of America Band, and has appeared regularly with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra since 2004. She also performs with the Opera Theater of St. Louis, Kansas City Symphony, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Illinois Symphony, Sessions Big Band, and the St. Louis Jazz Orchestra. Mrs. Honnold is an artist-endorser for the Conn-Selmer Corporation.

Interactions for Baritone Saxophone and Percussion is a brand new work by Dr. Zachary Cairns, Assistant Professor of Music Theory at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Two movements of the work recently won first prize in the 2014 Percussive Arts Society composition contest. The composer is a percussionist, so the work showcases a rhythmically-driven exchange between the weighty timbre of the baritone saxophone and multiple percussion instruments. The collaborative performers of the work are Adrianne Honnold, Lecturer in Saxophone at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and Jeffrey Barudin, Assistant Professor of Music at Lindenwood University.
Adrianne Honnold and Zachary Cairns are colleagues at the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL) and Interactions for Baritone Saxophone and Percussion represents their first collaboration. It originally began as a work in two movements, entitled “Hocket-ish” and “Tandem” with the latter movement featuring a groove-based rhythmic motif that alternates between the saxophonist and percussionist throughout, and both movements feature a hint of funk. The as-yet untitled third movement is the antithesis of the other two movements. It is reflective and ethereal, a welcome respite from the pulse of the outer movements. The composer’s background as a percussionist and as a fan of 1980’s heavy metal are both influential to the overall tone of the work. If chosen, the piece will receive its world premiere in Strasbourg in 2015.
Two movements from Interactions for Baritone Saxophone and Percussion by Zachary Cairns won the first ever Percussive Arts Society composition contest in 2014.

The composer Zachary Cairns is Assistant Professor of Music Theory and Director of Music Theory Studies at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
