More informations

“Punching Holes in Space” is a composition by Paul Elwood for three musicians: alto and baritone saxophone; piccolo trumpet in A, trumpet in C and flugelhorn; and extended percussion featuring an iPad with tone gen(erator) and Synthophone apps. The piece was composed in late 2014 for saxophonist Jon Gudmundson, trumpeter Max Matzen, and percussionist Jason Nicholson, faculty members in the Caine College of the Arts at Utah State University. This is a world premiere.

The composition is inspired by a line in James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake: Elwood thought about points in time evoked by notes of music . . . “Music,” he states, “may be considered to be punching holes in space with sound, or with silence as the converse of sound; the hole in space being the absence or presence of sound.”
