Saxophone trio with electronics

J. Nolan, S. Stusek, L. Estoppey & N. Scherzinger / electroacoustic

New work for three saxophones accompanied by computed-generated sounds controlled by a musician.

projet 2079 Julia02-207x300

Biography

Proposed new work for saxophone trio and interactive computer. This is a proposal for a new work for tenor saxophones and computer (Max – software, visual programming language). The work will be a 15-18 minute composition for three saxophones and electronic sounds generated and controlled by a musician/technician at the computer. The saxophones will not be amplified, but instead the work will blend the acoustic sounds of the saxophones with that of the computer-generated sounds (2-channel). A musician will be controlling the Max software application at a computer, triggering very specific sounds that will be synced with the three saxophones.

Proposed new work for three tenor saxophones and interactive computer. Thus, the electronics sounds will be very flexible and adapt to the saxophone music (rather than the saxophones trying to line up their parts with pre-existing electronics). The piece will be in four sections (or movements), with aleatoric and/or indeterminate musical interludes in between the movements. All the music will be written out, though the interludes will give the performers some options as to what to play (this includes the computer electronic music part). The musician at the computer will be an active participant in the performance and during the interludes will have the opportunity to choose the order of which sounds will interact with the performers. Thus, there will be a lot of interaction between the saxophonists and the computer musician. All the electronic sounds will be originally recorded acoustic saxophone sounds and then manipulated in various ways.
